Research and consultancy: improving teaching and learning in post-14 education

Research

Research takes a variety of forms and is often an important ingredient in consultancy work or professional development activity

Below are some examples of the kind of research work we have done for clients

Analysis

The development of bids, policies, strategies, partnership arrangements or approaches to improving teaching and learning often needs some background research into such things as:

  • strategic context (economic, political, social, etc.)
  • market opportunities
  • stakeholder interest and influence
  • examples of good practice
  • results of academic research

We have done work of this kind for a number of clients, mainly large further education colleges, often as part of a larger project such as a bid for special funding

Rational analysis

To support consultancy activities we use a range of sophisticated methods of rational analysis. We have particular expertise in:

  • Soft Systems Methodology
  • Mathematical modelling
  • Concept mapping

Making sense

Sometimes educational bodies need to make sense of data, information or opinion. We have used a number of techniques to help clients gather of make sense of data. Examples include:

  • focus groups
  • collating, presenting and interpreting data
  • reporting on the outcomes of investigations and evaluations

Work of this kind has been done for an Open College Network, Local Learning and Skills Council and educational establishments.

Assessing risks

Risk is an ever-present aspect of modern educational management and some form of risk management is required for every project. We have provided advice and guidance on risk management regimes for a number of public bodies with an educational role. We have also assessed the risks associated with projects funded by JISC.
